KINGSVILLE — Local entrepreneurs and small business owners will have an opportunity to learn how to compete for government and private-sector contracts through a free, nine-week training program launching this week.
The BID (Businesses in Development) Academy, offered through Prairie View A&M University Extension’s Community and Economic Development program, is designed to help businesses build the skills and confidence needed to navigate the bidding process.
According to program organizers, the academy is open to businesses of all sizes and across a wide range of industries, including barbershops, consulting services, construction companies, and food-based businesses.
“The BID Academy is a free, nine-week, cohort-based experience that equips small businesses with hands-on tools, strategy, and capacity to pursue government contracts with confidence,” organizers said in program materials.
The program will begin Wednesday, April 1, with an overview session and continue through June 10. Sessions will cover topics such as business planning, marketing, pitch writing, bookkeeping basics, access to capital, working with suppliers and subcontractors, and submitting proposals and bids.
Classes will be held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kleberg County Community and Economic Development Center, located at 501 S. Escondido Road in Kingsville. Participants must commit to attending all sessions to graduate, and space is limited to two participants per business.
Organizers say the goal is not only to provide training but also ongoing support.
“We will work with you during and after the academy to achieve your goals,” the program states.
The academy is part of a broader effort to support local economic development by helping small businesses access contracting opportunities that may otherwise feel out of reach.
