Kleberg County Human Services offering additional utility assistance

By Kingsville Independent News Staff

Kleberg County Human Services is continuing to provide utility assistance to eligible residents and has expanded help through additional private funding programs.

Residents who have not yet received assistance may visit the office at 1109 E. Santa Gertrudis St. to set up an appointment. Applicants will be provided a list of required documents needed to apply.

For those who have already received assistance and have exhausted their credit, additional help may still be available through a different program, even if the applicant’s utility service is currently disconnected or has a past-due balance. In these cases, residents may apply by phone without needing to appear in person. Any late fees or penalties must be paid by the applicant.

Kleberg County Human Services also has private assistance funds for TXU Energy customers, with aid available up to $700 once per program year. The utility bill must be under the applicant’s name, and there is no income limit for this private assistance. Late fees and penalties are the responsibility of the applicant.

Additional private assistance funding through NRG will soon become available for customers of the following providers:

  • Reliant Energy
  • Cirro Energy
  • Green Mountain
  • Stream Energy
  • Discount Power
  • Direct Energy
  • XOOM Energy

NRG assistance can provide up to $600 per program year with no income limit, and may also cover penalties, fees and deposits, depending on availability of funds.

All private assistance programs are based on availability of funds.

The Kleberg County Human Services office is open 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. In-person appointments are available as needed.
