Cyclists from across Texas gathered in Kingsville April 25 for the Kingsville Noon Lions Club’s annual “Ride on the Wild Side” cycling event, a community fundraiser supporting programs for children, seniors and local service initiatives.
According to information provided by the organization, approximately 125 riders participated in this year’s event, which featured three cycling routes totaling 61 miles. The first portion of the ride included access through the historic King Ranch, offering participants a chance to experience local scenery and wildlife along the route.
Organizers said the ride is not designed as a competitive race, though participants often enjoy friendly competition throughout the course.
This year’s event also included participation from three teams representing Wind-Riders of Texas, an organization that uses specially modified bicycles allowing children with disabilities to ride alongside an adult companion.
Riders received a pre-ride baked potato dinner, event T-shirts, medals and goody bags provided by local businesses and community supporters.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Texas Lions Camp for children with disabilities in Kerrville, according to the Kingsville Noon Lions Club. Organizers said 51% of proceeds will support the camp, while remaining funds will help support local Lions Club programs, including civic projects, children’s initiatives, senior adult services, medical screenings and scholarships.
Organizers said participants faced challenging weather conditions during the ride but added that riders still enjoyed the event and are already looking forward to next year’s ride.
